Content. Content is everywhere. Content is on the TV you watch, the radio you listen to on your way to or from the office, on your iPod etc. Content is what you are reading right now. The Internet is powered by content. Your real estate business is powered by real estate content. One of the questions I get a lot from my clients and those Phoenix REALTORS® that attend my real estate marketing classes is What Is Real Estate Content and How Do I Create It?

Real estate marketing has changed. It has changed in response to a shift in consumer behavior – towards the Internet. Years ago we got our information from the yellow pages, TV, Radio, magazines. Today we get it from the Internet. This is especially true in the real estate space as 98% of consumers start their home search on the Internet.

Years ago you could run your real estate business solely on Outbound Marketing techniques. Outbound marketing is also classified as Interruption marketing and relies on a message to “interrupt” a consumer to get their attention, even if only for a moment. Outbound Marketing staples of the real estate industry include: Postcards, Flyers, Print Real Estate Books, Billboards, Sports Schedules, Magnets, Calendars, Shopping Carts, Letter Openers and on and on and on.

Today these tools, while still effective in some regard, are cost prohibitive. In addition consumers do not respond to these types of marketing the same way they used to. Why? The Internet. Where do you go when you have a need? Where do you go when you have a problem? Where do you go when you want to learn more about a product or service, person or place? The Internet.

With consumers choosing the Internet when they have a need, there is a lot of competition for their attention. Your real estate business, now and in the future will be dependent on getting found on the Internet at the exact moment a consumer has a need for your product or service. I find it ironic that social media has made us anything but – social. We don’t like to talk on the phone anymore. We don’t like it when our “friends” pop by unannounced and in some regards we don’t even like to talk to strangers or those we “kind of know” anymore. These are some of the traditional methods current real estate models are built on. Houston. . .we have a problem.

Getting found online relies upon real estate content. You will need to learn HOW TO create the real estate content a consumer, your IDEAL CLIENT would look for when they have a need. Not all real estate content is created the same. Why you are an AMAZING REALTOR® is bad real estate content. The fact that you are an ABR, CRS, GRI, ePRO, CDPE is bad real estate content, an article about your team or brokerage is bad real estate content. Why? Because no one is scouring the Internet looking for any of it. Bad real estate content will render your real estate website a virtual ghost town, good real estate content is sticky. It will not only help you get found online, it will keep consumers on your website longer giving them more time to search for homes and lear HOW you can help them.
