Make it smaller. I’m talking about your BOX of course. Your BOX is your marketing, your customers, your ideal client, your – real estate business.

In the old days [5 – 6] years ago the “typical” real estate agents marketing plan was the old standbye “Spray and Pray”. Send a ton of marketing messages in all directions using all mediums [email, print, billboards, door hangers, postcards] and HOPE for a lead. And ya know what – it worked.

That was then and this is now.

Today consumers HATE to be marketed or SOLD to. YOU HATE to be marketed or SOLD to. It’s probably one of the reasons 80% of consumers do not trust conventional advertising/marketing. I always found it comical how many agents would hang up on me [in the old days] when I cold called them only to hear that same real estate agent say how rude some people are when they cold called someone else. So I have a rule. IF YOU DON’T RESPOND TO SOMETHING – DON’T DO IT TO SOMEONE ELSE. Try and think like a consumer not necessarily like a real estate agent. We are really not that different.

The internet has changed the way we do business. When I say “WE” I am talking about the world. Everything is now accessible at a moments notice – only a keystroke away. Back in the days most real estate agents wanted to be all things to everyone. “For All Your Real Estate Needs” was and still is a common tagline in the real estate space. Today trying to be all things to everyone is a quick way to go broke. Let me explain.

Today, the “traditional” real estate marketing methods [postcards, flyers, billboards, email blasts, TV, Radio, Newspapers, Yellow Pages, Door hangers] have become less effective [if at all] and certainly cost prohibitive in large numbers. However, you can grow your real estate business by making your BOX smaller. Instead of trying to be all things to everyone you can be SOMETHING to SOMEONE.

The way I see it, you have TWO choices. Well, at least you do when we are talking about your real estate marketing. You can:

A: Chase consumers around trying to SELL and CLOSE them [can be expensive, frustrating and expensive]

OR

B: You can help them find you on the Internet by creating the valuable and informative content they would look for when they have a need.
